Not so Boring After All. . .

So, I was scrolling through some of my old pictures and thinking, "Wow, have I really done all these cool things?"

Ice fishing on Pineview Reservoir. Don't be scared, this ice was at least 20" thick.

Ran a 5K dressed up like a tourist with my tourist wife and my crossdressing brother.

Sat on Santa's lap. This particular instance was remarkable because Santa was my brother.

Went curling at the Ogden Ice Sheet with my good friend Nathan Kester. What a stud.

Rode 50 miles on my bike during the "Tour de Park City" cycling event.

I have met Thomas the Train in person. . . sort of

I love to play the electric guitar. And I still to this very day like Iron Maiden. So condemn me.

I crawled up into my attic one night just out of pure curiosity and boredom.

I have painted little girls' fingernails and toenails pink, and I loved every minute of it.

I have raced down the slopes of the Rocky Mountains on a snowboard.

I have been to Amish country. They have my full respect and admiration. They don't care that gas prices are more than $4 a gallon.

I have been to one of the most spectacular animated dinosaur museums in all of North America.

I held my wifes hand as she endured a C-Section. Actually, I endured watching a C-Section while my wife held my hand.

I have supervised a coupon training class.

Did I mention snowboarding?

I often wonder how Noah accomplished what he did.

I have built my own swingset. Dumb idea? Maybe, but my girls love it - and I even put the slide on it the other day.

I have bowled with a pink bowling ball while wearing spectacle frames with no lenses.

I got into triathlon because of my wife. She did it first. What an amazing woman.

I have trick or treated dressed up as a Sumo wrestler with Mr. Incredible. (Nathan Kester)

I have adopted a little girl that I can't possibly live without now, and I thank my God every day for that little girl.

I beat some dude in an orange jersey during the Ogden Valley Triathlon.

I have potty trained two little girls. My wife has potty trained two little girls and a husband.

I have played soccer with some of the best players in the world.

I can do a backbend.

Yeps

From my favorite Dr. Seuss book ever. . . Wocket in My Pocket. I bring you the Yeps on my Steps.

You think you know Rylee? But you don't know the real Rylee until you have experienced RYLEE ON SUGAR. This is quality entertainment that must be experienced.

This is Lauren when she's "not tired." This is the couch in the living room, and this happened in a matter of minutes.

Lauren catches her first fish with her new Disney Princesses fishing pole. We went fishing yesterday, just me and Lauren.

Rylee Jane is a genuine one-of-a kind. This kid defines a new category for two year olds.

  • She already knows most of the alphabet and lots of numbers and can even write a few
  • She likes to sleep in the dark. But when she does wake up in the night she crawls into Lauren's bed - not mine.
  • She has a stunning vocabulary and clearly annunciates her words. "Daddy, can you pump up my flat tire please?" (remember - she's only two)
  • Her favorite food is octopus (so she says)
  • She can successfully zip her own clothing. I still struggle with this myself
  • She sports pink Jellies on her feet, even in the bathtub
  • She prefers thick Nutella on her toast
  • She doesn't like pickles
  • She has mastered all of Lauren's buttons and entertains herself by pushing them in different orders
  • She gives me kisses on my cheeks to soften me up when I'm frustrated
  • She doesn't get tired, she only gains energy and becomes increasingly naughty
  • My personal favorite - she is fully potty trained and even wipes her own backside

Bear Lake

For Lauren's Birthday we went to Bear Lake in Idaho.

Rylee & Sam are pals. Sam teaches Rylee how to make mud castles.

Rylee, Annie, Lauren. All afraid of the mildly cold water.

Collin & Owen diggin in the mud. John & Adam throwing the football, Sam in the background.

Adam Heaton. Coolest thing about this guy - he has had these cool $2 sun glasses forever and he loves 'em. I can't get enough of Adam's great sense of humor. You can read more about Adam & Lindsey on Adam's blogsite http://www.bingbonghooha.blogspot.com/.

One of the highlights of marrying into the call family - I inherited some very cool brothers. Sharon cleans the bathroom for me everytime we come to visit and feeds me like a KING. John is just glad to have other guys around that can appreciate a large screen TV and a stunning surround sound system. Adrian has just picked up the sport of triathlon and will be doing the Ogden Valley Triathlon with me this September.

Ten Things

There are certain things that "go against the grain," if you will. Coloring outside the lines, sanding wood in the wrong direction, etc. Not sure why I decided to compile this list, maybe I just feel there's a fair bit of subtle humor to be had here - and I want to bring it to the front for a moment where it's a bit more visible. So, here it is. . . TEN THINGS
1. Crumbs on my Feet. It's true, I sweep the floor alot. Janna thinks I sweep the kitchen floor because I am trying to be helpful. The truth is, my feet have zero tolerance for crushing cheerios, smashing peas, and picking up the random speck. Does this not bother anyone else? The lazy answer to this problem might be to wear my sandals, but then I wouldn't score any bonus points for helping. . . so. . . I sweep.

2. Hunting for stuff. I really don't like searching for commonplace, everyday items such as keys, my wallet, my shades, a ball pump, my inhaler. You might say, "Well, you should put them in a designated place." Thanks for that pure revelation. Unfortunately, that only works if your normal. This inability to use a "designated place" is a severe genetic defect that I suffer from daily. Even Lauren knows where my keys are when I don't. Janna is quietly patient about it and often let's me wallow in my self inflicted sorrows of searching. There is one thing that she helps me with - and that's my inhaler. She frowns upon the idea of me having an asthma attack without an inhaler because then she won't have anyone to sweep the floor. Aside from that, I'm on my own.

There's one key on the rack and it's not the one I need.

3. Traffic Lights. Is it just me, or does everyone else catch ALL the red lights. I can approach it from any direction using every trick of stealth and creativity within the law - but the moment I jump out and break for the intersection - RED. That's right, there is no yellow, it goes straight to red. You don't believe me do you? My point exactly, it only happens to me.

it's a personal vendetta we share - me and lights

4. Extremely Spicy Food. You might ask, "Oh, how can you not like spicy food?" Really? Do you like having a runny nose while you eat?

5. Flat Tires. I do however, have a very humorous story about changing a flat tire. I published it on Setpoint Systems' Blog because after the fourth telling to my co-workers I decided to just publish it. It's well worth reading, I only wish I could have watched this myself instead of been the victim. The article is entitled, It Tastes Like Elmers School Glue. Just click here if you would like to read it and have a good laugh. [http://blog.setpointusa.com/it-tastes-like-elmers-school-glue/

It's always fun until someone gets a flat.

6. Broken Sprinkler Pipes. I'll admit, it was fun the first time. But even then, that particular instance was only fun until I realized I had to make a second trip to Home Depot. "Hey, wait a minute. This isn't as fun as it was three hours ago when I first saw the bubble in my grass." My future dream home. . . cement on all sides. Let the park across the street have the soccer grass - and everything that comes with it.

7. Waiting. Do you realize that if you wait an average of 2 minutes in a cashier line, then by the age of 65 you will have spent approximately 1.25 years in line? Okay, I made that number up. But by the time you throw other variables into the equation, 1.25 years might be too low. What about driving your car? What about sitting on the toilet? What about looking for your keys, or shades, or waiting at a red light? Then again, maybe its just me.

I know this picture has no relation to waiting but admit it - it's more interesting.

8. Divers. You see, in soccer we have a special label for those players who act as if they have been pushed or tripped and fall down in order to draw the foul. My brain is simply not programmed to think that way. I would rather win the ball in the heat of play than draw a foul. What about basketball? It's a shame that sport has evolved into a "draw the foul" drama. Unbelievable. I am not a person to quit something, anything. However, one year I played on the "church ball" team and we competed in a stake tournament. Both sides were blissfully falling, sliding, and simply dropping over at the right moment to draw the foul, all "part of the game." Diver heaven. I fouled out of the game in the first quarter. "How?" you wonder. I will never tell because I'll never know. Take me back to a real sport.

9. Asparagus, squash, cauliflower. You can't hydraulically force my jaw bones apart with any lever for just a small fraction of such unadulterated, pure seething evil. No, it's not even good "the way you cook it." Some things are just not meant to be eaten. There are a lot more, but I'll stop here.

10. Asymmetry. I bowl straight down the middle, no spin. I figure by the time it reaches the pins it will have naturally veered off to one side of the middle. I believe this is what categorizes me as boring, normal, and unimaginitive. I prefer smooth ice cream, perfect circles, balanced architecture, straight lines, even numbers, 90 degree angles, centered yellow lines in the road. In fact, if I could have it my way - the steering wheel would be in the middle. I'm not saying I want to be this way, and I'm certainly glad everyone is not this way. I try to stretch my mind to reach for that asymmetrical creative edge, but its an abstract place beyond my mental grasp. Notice I put 10 things, not 11. there you have it. . . so - am i strange?

A Homemade Piece for Nana

She's no Franz Liszt, but Lauren is certainly dedicated when it comes to finding time to play the piano. She will sit down here everyday at least once. Most days we are "treated" to three or four seperate pieces she composes herself - on the spot. This particular piece is dedicated to Nana.

I Designed That!!

I normally don't pat myself on the back, but I think it's my turn.

I saw a little blip on NBC news about some of the latest music/media technology that's on the market. In this report there was a short section devoted to the "Music ATM." The company who produces these ATM's is based in Salt Lake City, it's called MediaPort Entertainment. One of the managers is a good friend of mine and when MediaPort needed someone to design the skeleton frame for their Music ATM, he gave me a call.

I completed the mechanical design in about a week and a half, and have been working on completing the drawing package which details every part down to the hole sizes, paint color, surface finish, welding instructions and assembly instructions. I assisted during the production of their first prototypes in a local sheet metal shop here in Ogden.

Here is their link that shows the Music ATM.

Here is a screenshot of my 3D Model:
The most rewarding part of designing things is seeing it come to life. The most challenging part of the mechanical design was the elliptical shaped weldment at the top and the bottom. My favorite details in the design are the fans, the music note shaped speakers, and the louvers.
These notes were ridiculous to design into sheet metal. But in the end it turned out looking pretty good. The manufacturer will have to cut this out using a laser cutter, no traditional machine shop can cut it.

This is the fan. There is one on each side, including the grill, and PEM studs to mount the fan to inside the sheet metal frame.

These are the air flow louvers that help with air circulation for the fans and keep all the electronics inside cool. Above the Louvers there is a proprietary cam lock, similar to the kind you see on a vending machine.

The Law of Spontaneity

Rylee enjoys a quiet moment watching everything after she gets out of the boat. She seemed to enjoy being pulled in the inner tube, but she was ready to get out of the boat when it came to shore.

Melanie Tilley, Wendy Stoker, Janna Banana. For Family Night this week, we went to Pineview reservoir (25 minutes away) and rode in the Tilley's boat, went tubing, barbecued, and played in the sand. Bill & Erin Hansen also came, we had a great time.

Tuesday at work I realized I didn't have to work the rest of the week because of Pioneer Day holidays, company work schedule, etc. When I told Janna about it, she said, "Wow, let's go camping tonight." So when I got home we packed the girls into the car with all our stuff and we went camping. We were in a quiet spot in North Fork canyon (30 minute drive) by a small river, the girls absolutely loved every minute of it. We endured lightning, thunder and hard rain in the middle of the night, but we stayed dry. Me, Janna, and Lauren were up most of the night, but Rylee didn't even budge.

Why is it that the unplanned "Spontaneous Activities" are almost always more fun than the ones on the calendar?

Nerd Moment in 3D

It's a virtual 3D model of a ring. I have many 3D models of machines and parts, but a ring is so visually pleasing. A circle is perfect, flawless, and simple. A circle is actually a special case of an ellipse where the eccentricity is equal to 1 and both focal points merge to occupy the same spot. Pure genius. Proof that there is a Supreme Creator.

Pirate Alias

Have you taken the Pirate Name Quiz yet? It's the first link below my turtles (which are hungry, by the way). If not, you must proceed directly to be dubbed a Pirate.

Just call me, Iron Jack Cash.

Our 4th Of July Weekend

One moment she is smiling, but the moment I take the picture. . . This was actually taken on July 3rd on our way to the Real Salt Lake vs Houston Dynamo soccer match in Salt Lake City. We had a great time and watched a spectacular fireworks show afterwords.

The girls rode in the children's parade in the morning. Lauren even made Janna stop for the red light along the route. . . so Janna stopped not sure how to tell Lauren it's okay to run this one.

We waited in line for samples at the Dutch Oven cookoff competition. It was worth it.

Rylee enjoyed the sparklers this year.

Me. . . it's hard being retarded, people laugh a lot.

Bike Date Night

We look forward to Date Night. This time we didn't spend any money, and we didn't eat any food, instead - we burned calories. We loaded our Subaru Outback up with our bikes and drove out west a little ways.

We found an empty church parking lot and pulled in. For almost 1-1/2 hours we explored the open roads out by Willard Bay. The air here is very bug infested. I had lost my shades so my eyes had no protection from the bugs that pelted my eyes fairly often. In spite of the bugs, this ranks among the top 5 of our most fun dates. Doesn't Janna look good?

Things we Pray For

The other night after we sat down at the table for a nice dinner, Lauren volunteered to give the prayer. She had already seen what we were having for dinner and she is usually a very good eater - not picky. Her prayer expressed her true feeling for the dinner when she said, "Please bless this food to not be poisonous and also please help us to not eat things off of the floor."

How can you not laugh? After the prayer, she frankly reminded Janna & I that we are supposed to be reverent during the prayer and not laugh.

Interview with Rylee

What do you think Rylee's favorite food is? You will be suprised.
